New Google Maps update allows you to upload photos and tie it together to a Place
Google Maps has been updated to version 5.8 which adds some new featuresto the app. Now, pictures that you take with your phone can be used to tie in with Places. By doing this, you get to show via photographs what a particular place looks like. You might even have the profile picture for a particular Place.

Google has now added "descriptive terms" and "My Places" for the mobile version of Google Maps. The former tells you what a business is known for such as "Great coffee" or "Clean restrooms". The mobile version of My Places lets you know what places you have recently starred and which ones you have just visited. Finally, if you are out and want to check-in somewhere, you can add a new Place for businesses that haven't set up a page yet.

Other new features include a way to increase the size of the text in experimental labs. You also won't find the command "Download map area" which is now titled ‘Pre-cache map area.’ Download the updated Google Maps 5.8 for free from the Android Market, for handsets running Android 2.1 or higher.

Android Market update rolling out now... ...

We already reported that changes were coming to the Android Market. On Wednesday, some models started receiving the updated online applications store which now includes videos for rental and books for purchase along with the usual number of apps and games for you to download. A colorful new UI helps you navigate the Market and downloads are divided into a number of different categories.

Video rentals include a star-based rating system, a synopsis of the plot, cast and crew, a short video preview, reviews and related titles. Different genres like Drama, Action and Adventure, Comedy, Horror and others are listed. Rentals start at $1.99. Book categories include Fiction, Children's, Horror and more and include a description of the book and a free sample. Pricing varies.

The new UI, which can be confusing at first, allows users to see 12 apps or game titles at one time, which might speed up your "window shopping" in the Android Market. Overseas Android owners, be patient as the updated Android Market is heading your way.

For those whose handset has already been updated with the new Android Market, let us know what you think by typing in your comments in the box below.

Mozilla B2G Announced (A Web Centric Mobile OS)... ...

Mozilla yesterday announced its plans to develop an open source mobile operating system. The OS will be focused primarily on web-apps. Dubbed B2G , the OS will make use of HTML5 capabilities to deliver basic phone functionality via various APIs.
Mozilla will be using parts from Android to enable hardware acceleration.
Mozilla’s plan with the OS is to provide :
  • New web APIs: build prototype APIs for exposing device and OS capabilities to content (Telephony, SMS, Camera, USB, Bluetooth, NFC, etc.)

  • Privilege model: making sure that these new capabilities are safely exposed to pages and applications

  • Booting: prototype a low-level substrate for an Android-compatible device

  • Applications: choose and port or build apps to prove out and prioritize the power of the system.

  • The User Interface is going to be entirely unique and will build an application stack around Gecko. The B2G project is still in the early stages so we shouldn’t expect any devices based on the OS to hit the market anytime soon.

The earpiece appears to have been redesigned. The headset jack and power button have also been re positioned. The Moto Blur logo is missing from the device and the phone appears to have a curved glass display. The Android Gingerbread based handset is expected to be available on AT&T later this year.

iPhone 5 hitting USA on September 5, International launch on October 5... ...

From last few months, we are hearing a lot of rumors about the Apple upcoming iPhone. Last month, we first heard that China Mobile will launch the new iPhone in September and then an analyst also claimed it, but he further said that Apple will launch two versions of it, one will be known as iPhone 5 and other will be iPhone 4S. We heard it before that there will be two versions of iPhone, but let’s wait for Apple to clear the air. I am about to tell you about another rumor related to the next iPhone, but this one is related to the release only. iPhoneItalia is claiming that their very reliable source is saying that Apple will be launching the iPhone 5 in October, and the source of this news is a senior executive at Swisscom, which is one of the major telecommunication providers in Switzerland. Good news is that Apple will launch it in USA on September 5 and internationally on October 5. iPhoneItalia source can be trusted because it’s directly linked to Swisscom, and as we also heard in past that September is the month when we will see the next iPhone, so lets take it with few grains of salt.
Well folks, I think it’s not wrong to say that we will see the iPhone 5 in September, but now there’s only one question, is it only iPhone 5 or Apple is also launching iPhone 4S? Well, September is not that far, only 6 weeks and these six weeks will be like years for Apple fanboys, right? About the specs, we heard that it will feature a dual-core A5 processor, better rear and front facing camera, bigger display with edge-to-edge screen, and some new good features.
So who’s looking forward to the new iPhone, anyone?
